Next says the recent snow "significantly affected" retail sales - fell 3.1% between Aug 1st to Dec 24th, costing estimated £22m [via Twitter]

HMV says like for like sales down 13.6% in five weeks to Jan 1st - "significantly undermined by severe weather" [via Twitter]

The Cold Snap saw sales of winter clothes soar at Blacks Leisure.  Like-for-like sales in its outdoors business increased by 10.2% in the key December trading perdiod - Metro

Hopes of an export-led economic recovery have been bolstered by the latest survey of activity in the manufacturing sector. The measure, released by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS), shows its strongest performance for 16 years in December, driven by strong orders for British goods from overseas

David Cameron has taken a leaf out of Alan sugars book.  He has outlined a New Enterprise Allowance to help create up to 40,000 start up businesses over the next two years.  There will be access to a start-up loan, finaincial support for the early months of self employment and a business mentor will be available to anyone who is unemployed with a viable business idea.

BASKETBALL
COLIN Sing feels the Essex Pirates need to play more as a team if they are to improve on their disappointing start to the season.The Southend-based side currently sit bottom of the British Basketball League without a win in 12 outings.
And Sing puts that situation partly down to a lack of cohesion in the camp.Pirates coach Tim Lewis tinkered with his squad at the beginning of the season and Sing believes the constant chopping and changing of the team made it hard to get results in the opening few fixtures of the campaign.

CRICKET UPDATE
England have been dominant on Day 3 of the final Ashes Test.They ended the day 488 for 7 in their first innings, a very healthy lead of 208 runs. Alistair Cook made 189, and Ian Bell hit 115, his first century in an Ashes test.

HOLLYWOOD
Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lopez will serve as presenters at the 68th Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Tuesday afternoon.
