It’s A Brand New Year - 4th January 2011

Welcome to 2011 everyone & what a great way to kick off the brand new year. It wasn’t a special show this week, but there was plenty to get excited about...

Just to be different, we kicked off with something that sounds like it belongs in the 70’s but is actually from the 21st century – I saw Tinlin supporting Paul Carrack back in November & their music has been compared to the ballads & harmonies of Yes, ELP & Genesis, but I reckon there’s some Moody Blues influences in there too – Alex from the band reckons he & his brother Rolf were born 30 years too late...

And so we had to have a little Moody Blues for comparison & then the Justin Hayward sung hit single from Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds, which I saw at Wembley Arena just before Christmas & would recommend see it if you get the chance…

OK it wasn’t a special show, but I thought we’d look at some different flavours of 70’s rock this week, so we had Chicago (funk), Steely Dan (jazz), The Doobies (soul), Elton John (disco), Van Morrison (swing jazz), Eric Clapton (reggae), The Police (white reggae), The Stones (blues), Rush (heavy), Jimi Hendrix (guitar), Japan (electro), Roxy Music (dance), Dr Feelgood (pub), The Bay City Rollers (tartan), Dave Edmunds (rockabilly) & Fleetwood Mac (album oriented). Phew! Oops, no glam rock…

Slowing things down a little, Kate Bush gave us her musical interpretation of the film of the classic book – her song was inspired by Timothy Dalton’s performance as Heathcliffe – Mr. Bond, it’s me Cathy, let me in at your window…

A tender love song from Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, a heartfelt expression of feeling at home from Billy Joel & ELO’s beautifully atmospheric song of a utopia isolated from the rest of the world, led us to a big finish of two excellent live performances: Peter Frampton’s beautiful “Lines On My Face” & the King’s outstanding “I Just Can’t Help Believing” from the album & concert movie “That’s The Way It Is”. The gentler side of rock…

Next weeks show is another to look forward to, with plenty of musical variety & trivia, as always, so listen if you can…
