METRO BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Shares in healthcare group Smith and Nephew soared to an all-time high following rumours it rejected a  bid from US rival Johnson and Johnson.  Hull-based Smith's share price increased 11% to 723p, adding about £650million to its market value.

Shop Direct saw a 5% rise in sales over Christmas as snowed-in shoppers snapped up goods from the comfort of their own home. Orders for online brands including Littlewoods, Very and Woolworths peaked at 8,000 in one hour on its busiest day December 6th

Housebuilder Persimmon delivered a profits surprise yesterday despite the impact of the freezing weather on an already sluggish housing market.

The average cost of a home fell by 3.4% last year - to £162,435 with a 1.3% slide in December alone figures revealed yesterday.

In this mornings sports hour Mike Linger from Winger Sports Academy is here to tell you about a new Adult Dodgeball team that he is starting this month,  with the aim of entering teams in the UKDBA tournaments during the 2010 - 2011 season.

WSA Dodgers is run by Mike Linger who is a qualified coach within the UKDBA as well as being the Essex Development Officer for Dodgeball. Mike is also the Essex Dodgeball coach and is eager to find talented players to represent England who are the European champions of 2010.

Their aim is to encourage more teams and players in the Essex area to take up the sport, . Winger Sports Academy have already begun a huge operation to get many more adults in the area involved in the fun, fast, exciting and developing sport!  If you want to be like Vince Vaughn and Justin Long in the movie get down to the first training Session at the Hutton Community Centre:

Rapper turned actor/director Ben Drew, aka Plan B, believes there are fewer opportunities in the film industry for working class kids.


Drew first became famous for his music, with his two albums winning critical acclaim.

He has now won plaudits in the film industry for his acting, with roles in Adulthood, Harry Brown - opposite Michael Caine - and 4,3,2,1.

Now he is adding directing to his repertoire. His first film, Ill Manors, is based in Forest Hill in southeast London where he grew up, but it took him three years before anyone agreed to make it.

Victoria Beckham has thanked her fans on Twitter for the "kind and beautiful messages" after she announced her pregnancy.  The Beckhams followers - including a few famous ones - have been sending Victoria and David so many messages of congratulations that VB thanked everyone saying "we are all so happy and excited".   The fashion designer is expecting their fourth child in the summer.

We all know that our favourite pieces of music make us feel good.  But scientists now claim to have proven our best-loved songs can trigger the same chemical reaction in us as good food, money or sex.  A team at McGill University in Montreal gave volunteers brain scans while they listened to their favourite euphoric anthems and found that regions of the brain released the same pleasure chemical.
