Thursday - Pete was in with his sporting weekend fixtures and Steve and Abby spoke about the Prom Show 2011

This morning Steve Petty  Mayor and Abby Knight popped by to talk about the Prom Show 2011 which is taking place on the 22nd and 23rd January doors open at 10am at the Brentwood Centre. They have Kayzar performing on the catwalk, Miss England will be hosting a beauty pagent and I'm a celebrity get me outta here star David van Day and Sue Moxley will be available for photo opportunities .  There will be fashion shows and all the stalls you could want under one roof to prepare for your Prom.

Tickets: Students pay £5 Teachers go half price and  Parents, Guardians, Over 60's and under 5's go in for free
The Official Charity is Fair Havens Children's Hospice and for every £5 ticket sold they'll donate 50p to the charity!

Inflation will continue to rise and may reach 4.5%, well above the Bank of England's target, the Sky News Money Panel has suggested ahead of today's interest rate decision.  The experts from across the financial and business communities concurred that the increase in VAT and commodity prices, coupled with a weak sterling adding to the cost of imported goods, would push inflation up further this year.  Predictions for peak inflation ranged from 3.7% to 4.5% in the short term, surpassing the high of 3.3% reached in November.

Tesco like-for-like sales rose 0.6% in 6 weeks to Jan 8th. Double digit growth in its 'Finest' range. Total international sales rose 14.2% [via Twitter]

Dixons Retail: Like-for-like sales down by 4% for the UK and Ireland in 12 weeks to Jan 8th - thinks 2% of that was down to wintry weather. [via Twitter]

Home Retail Group: Argos like for like sales down 4.9% - Homebase down 1.2% - in 18 weeks to Jan 1st. Expects profits within expectations. [via Twitter]

METRO BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Facebook paid £5.4million to buy the domain name www.fb.com, it was revealed yesterday.  It was owned by the American Farm Bureau Federation which now uses www.fb.org as its domain.  The sale ranks in the top 4 all-time domain name sales behind: sex.com (£3.8million), fund.com (£6.3million) and porno.com (£5.75million)

Henderson Group is set to buy troubled rival Gartmore to create one of the largest fund managers in Britain with £78billilon of assets.  The buyout, which will take three monthes if shareholders agree, values Gartmore at £335million, less than half its value when it floated in Devember 2009

GREGGS sold more than 8million mincepies in December in a last-minute surge which saw Christmas week sales up 19.6% on a year previously.  The 1,487strong bakery chain, which also reported a 26% boost in coffee sales to Christmas shoppers, said it was on target to deliver profits in line with City forecasts.

A FORMER teacher who is credited for getting hundreds of young people involved in sport has picked up an MBE from Prince Charles.  Carlton Darrell has been teaching badminton to schoolchildren across Thurrock for more than 40 years.  The 71-year-old, of Kersbrooke Way, Corringham, helped start up Thurrock Junior Badminton Club back in 1971 and is still president of the club today.  Carlton, who is originally from Bermuda, travelled to Buckingham Palace with his wife Jean to collect his MBE for services to the community

A LEADING trader has said hundreds more parking spaces are needed in Billericay to stop the town’s businesses being killed off.  Mr Draper decided to launch the petitions after getting the backing from Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron.
One petition will be sent to shopowners in the town centre for customers to sign, calling for the additional spaces, starting off with a target of 150 to 200 spaces.  Another petition will call for the strip of land next to the A176 to be used for a new car park, which will be sent to residents living near the site.   The petition will be available to sign in the Billericay Cookshop and Emporium, the Olive Branch, the Billericay Bakery, Toys and Tuck, Slipped Discs, Belmonts, Lamps and Sparklers.

The Hal Company presents a physical theatre piece written and directed by Danusia Iwaszko, which explores human consciousness through the medium of drama.
