Cllr Mike Le-Surf, Holocaust Memorial Day & The Long Run

It's been another fantastic week on Phoenix FM Drive, packed full with guests from start to finish.

Blue Monday was far from blue. As well as speaking to Aggro Santos (previous post), Mark Reed from the Brentwood Theatre was in the studio buoyant with news that this week's production The Wedding Singer was selling so well. The Brentwood Operatic Society show had already sold out of tickets for the Friday and Saturday evening performances, and a shed load had been shifted that day for the opening night on the Tuesday. We also reminisced over 17 years of the Guffaw Comedy Club who move out of the local venue with one last laugh next Monday evening.

On Tuesday's show, Alan Jefcoate from the Essex FSB popped in for the weekly round-up of all things business in the area. Brentwood High Street was once again the topic of discussion with traders struggling to pay their rates and more and more stores closing their doors for the final time. Man-in-the-know Mike Jones had the latest sporting goings-on as well.

Bryan Powis kindly sat in on Wednesday (which is funny because my Mum finally got her mate at work to listen to me and I wasn't there - sorry Mum!), whilst Thursday's programme saw former Phoenix presenter Mike Le-Surf take the microphone once more. The local Labour councillor for Brentwood South ward has hosted more daytime shows than my good self at the station, but he was in this week to chew the fat over Brentwood railway station and how more can be done for local commuters in spite of the improvement works which are underway. We also spoke on the phone to Carly from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust about the awareness event next Thursday on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. There are numerous events being held locally for it and this year's theme is untold stories. She reminded us of the horrors of the second world war and similar genecides since. Light a virtual candle at www.hmd.org.uk.

Finally Friday is the day for live music on Phoenix FM drive. It was a pleasure to have The Long Run squeeze into the studio with drums, keyboards, amps and guitars to play us a number of acoustic tracks. We also discovered their musical knowledge was pretty sound scoring 16 out of 20 on our name that tune quiz. It's a busy year for the Canvey Island five-piece and you can see all their upcoming dates at www.the-longrun.co.uk.

Now for some exciting news. Drive is on the move from the 31st January. You'll be able to catch the show 3-6pm Mondays and Tuesdays, and 2-6pm Wednesdays to Fridays. Thanks for listening. Thanks for reading. See you next week. Bye!
