Local Boys - 25th January 2011

A new show is always an exciting event & this week was no exception, lots of varied goodies to keep those ears happy, with a few local sounds...

Suzi Quatro is not local, but a stomper at ten o’clock is always a rousing way to get the show underway. Pilot spent February 1975 at the top of the charts singing about how they couldn’t wait to see the back of January – know what they mean...

Vic Collins, from Southend band The Kursaal Flyers, was born & bred in Rochford, as was Bob Fish, one of the singers in The Darts – their song was one of three UK #2 hits in a row they had in 1978. Queen continued with a UK #2 of their own & Racey did the same with their UK #2 – a song originally written by Nicky Chinn & Mike Chapman for Blondie! The Rubettes & a sensational effort from Moody Blues man Ray Thomas completed our little flirtation with 70’s rock & roll…

Despite it being recorded only last year, we featured an excellent song by the local band Exhibit A, from their latest album "Make Mine A Lobster". There’s a definite seventies/eighties feel about their music, which is clearly influenced by artists of that period. Exhibit A will appear in concert at the Essex Arms in Brentwood on 19th March – they’re well worth a watch & their music is well worth a listen (check out www.exhibita.org.uk)...

Alex Harvey & Ronnie Lane both died far too young, but their music lives on, although it really ought to be played more. Joe Jackson, Elton John, Paul McCartney & Steely Dan then all delivered classic tracks with a distinctive reggae flavour…

Bryan Ferry wrote "Beauty Queen" for his girlfriend at the time, Valerie Leon, who was a UK beauty queen & actress who appeared in several "Carry On" films, a couple of Bond movies & a Pink Panther caper, as well as The Italian Job & various cool TV shows like The Saint, The Avengers & The Persuaders…

10cc looked back on adolescence, while Godley & Creme sung of being in the big apple. Kate Bush & Jethro Tull brought us seldom-played (but nonetheless excellent) album tracks, then Cat Stevens, The Doobies & Bob Dylan gave us lesser-played US hits. To finish the show, The Hollies, The Eagles & Gordon Lightfoot slowed things down a bit…

Back next week with another intriguingly diverse selection & in a few weeks, on 15th Feb, we’ll have a "Love Special" to mark Valentine’s Day that week…
