JD Sports Fashion & JJB Sports confirm to markets this morning in early stage discussions over merger - as broken by Sky News last night. [via Twitter]

HMV Group is weighing a partial or full exit from the Canadian market as part of the entertainment retailer’s efforts to avoid a breach of its lending agreements in 2011, I have learned.

The company, which announced this month that it planned to close 60 stores in the UK this year in the wake of dismal Christmas trading, is examining options for the future of its 125 stores in Canada.

People familiar with the retailer’s thinking said it was “probable but not certain” that a significant chunk of HMV’s shops in Canada would be closed as the group slims down its operations.

A sale of the stores, which on average have leases of about three years, is considered unlikely because of the nature of the Canadian entertainment retail market, which is dominated by the country’s major supermarket chains and the likes of Best Buy.

CITIGROUP bank yesterday seized record label EMI from London private equity group Terra Firma.  The deal saw EMI's debt cut from £3.4billion to £1.2 billion, easing uncertainty over its future.

ONLINE retailer Ocado posted a profit for the first time yesterday.  The Retailer scraped into the black at the end of 2010 after it made a pre-tax profit of £300,000 for its final quarter to November 28th.  However the group remained in the red for the full year with pre-tax loses of £12.2million.

EVENING ECHO:

A CASHIER who has worked more than 76 years with the same company has finally called it a day.  Joan Lowman, 90, started work at Ravens department store, in Southend, years before her current boss was even born.  Now Joan, from Southend, has decided it is finally time to retire and put her feet up.  Owner Neil Raven, from Hockley, said staff had found it hard to say goodbye to such a dedicated member of the team.  He said: “Joan is like a second mum to me. She has known me since I was born and used to push me in my pram.  “It’s very sad, but all things have to finish and she is nearly 91, so she should be taking it easy.”  He added: “Joan worked in our cash office and looked after our invoicing for our account customers who looked forward to receiving her hand-written invoices.”
