The Lurve Special - 15th February 2011

The day after Valentine’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to continue that lovin’ feelin’ with some lurve, in the style of 70’s rock. That meant we had it hot & strong, soft & slushy, loud & heavy, tender & poignant & all ways in-between...

AC/DC (from “Highway To Hell”), Alice Cooper (from “Killer”) & Led Zeppelin had the right sentiments, on the heavier side & helped us remember Bon Scott, who died in February 1980, & John Bonham, who died later in 1980, but both left us soon after these songs were recorded. RIP guys...

On the softer side, Neil Young, Utopia, Stephen Stills, Heart & America delivered a set of lovely songs, after which the tempo picked up again with the Steve Miller Band & a very underrated track from Golden Earring…

Uriah Heep’s “Fallen Angel” album artwork caused a little controversy (nudity did that back in the 70’s), but the quality of the music was there. Bad Company & Rush gave us two top-drawer all-time classics & Nazereth slowed things down with their take on a song first recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960, although Roy Orbison’s cover was the first hit version in 1961 – Nazereth took this to #1 in Canada, Norway & Holland…

Carole King wrote the first ever US #1 by an all-girl group, when The Shirelles reached the top with “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” in 1960, but Carole’s version is beautiful & features both James Taylor & Joni Mitchell on backing vocals…

Dennis De Young wrote “Babe” as a birthday gift for his wife & it gave Styx a US #1. ELO had their first #1 album with “Discovery”, from which “Need Her Love” is taken. Sir Macca, who this week won a Grammy for his live performance of “Helter Skelter”, wrote “My Love” for Linda & it was recorded live in the studio with an orchestra – beautiful, as was Freddie Mercury singing the stunning “Love Of My Life”…

We had songs from Santana’s album “Marathon” (love is not a sprint!), that famous 70’s trio (lol) Bachman-Turner Overdrive & from the hunka-hunka King himself, before UFO showed us how albums should be finished – no fade out there!

And, finally, because of Valentine’s Day/Week/Season, we had to finish with the very best of ‘proper’ 70’s rock love songs – Wod Stewart (sic), Bread, The Eagles & the delightfully nostalgic 10cc…

Next week, Rob Harvey will cover the show while I’m on holiday & Graeme Holiday will take the hot seat for the following week (but I’ve given him all the music to keep your ears delighted). I will return on 8th March, so take care until then…
