House prices rose 3.1% this month despite low demand, new figures reveal.  The increase following a 0.3% jump last month left their average property in England and Wales costing £230,030 - broadly the same as a year earlier, said Rightmove.  Sellers were unwilling to drop their asking prices, even though there was a shortage of buyers.  About 530,000 mortgages were taken out last year, while Rightmove recorded 1.3million properties coming on to the market.

Virgin Atlantic is being circled by a number of airlines trying to tempt it in to a consolidation deal.  Among those said to be interested in persuading Sir Richard Branson's airline to join them are Air France - KLM and America's Delta.  Virgin Atlantic said it was 'not  surprised' at the interest being shown given its robust business position at Heathrow and Gatwick.

Torquay 1 - 1 Southend

Colchester 2 - 0 Walsall

Evening Echo,  By Chris Phillips

ESSEX Pirates returned to winning ways with an 94-90 triumph at Worthing Thunder on Saturday .  The victory stopped the Southend based side suffering a new BBL record of 31 successive defeats.

But Sunday they weren't so fortunate as they lost to Plymouth Raiders 98 - 72

SOUTHEND airshow will run over the last weekend of May instead of the Sunday and bank holiday Monday in a cost-saving measure.  Southend Council took the decision to run the show over Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29, instead of the traditional Sunday and Monday after negotiations with Essex Police indicated the cost of policing the event on a bank holiday would be prohibitive.  Last year was the first time the council had to pay for police cover for the event, and it is understood the cost had risen this year due to Government cuts.  Seafront traders have welcomed the move, but those in the town centre remain unconvinced.
