ESSEX Pirates youngster Dougie Bennett has been selected in the Scotland international squad.  The 17-year-old, who is a member of the club’s AASE team, will continue to train with his country until the summer when the roster will be cut for a series of games. Bennett, who lives in Shenfield and studies at SEEVIC College, in Thundersley, qualifies to play for Scotland through his mum’s side of the family. They were also proud at his call-up and gave Bennett a lift after an inconsistent season for the teenager.

LOCAL NEWS

Evening Echo, By Antonia Jones

A £7 parking charge has been slapped on a town centre car park in an attempt to stop rail passengers leaving their cars there all day.   From April 1, Basildon Council is introducing the charge at Billericay High Street car park on Saturdays, from 8am until 9.30pm.  The restrictions were approved by Basildon Council at a cabinet meeting to encourage rail passengers to use the free car park at the station in Radford Way, because it is under-used.  From 9.30am parking will be free after Basildon Council agreed to extend free weekend car parking for the third year in a row to support local businesses and residents.

Gazette, Nicola Taylor

TWO pupils at Brentwood County High School set up fake Facebook accounts to lure their classmates into online friendships and help teach them a lesson on internet safety.  A teacher at the school was given the task of picking two sixth-formers who created the false identities in efforts to befriend their peers.  The true identities of the two pupils remains a secret and speculation is sweeping the school corridors and playing fields.  The male sixth-former approached friends on the social networking site, assuming the identity of a teenage girl, pictured wearing a bikini.  His female sixth-form colleague, who similarly selected a picture from the internet, recreated herself as a teenage boy before setting out to attract friends.  The pair sent 'friend requests' to their classmates and were accepted by more than 100 students at the school before both accounts were terminated by Facebook.  One of the accounts, operated by the female student, was frozen after the website's administrators became suspicious of the number of friend requests made in a short period of time.  Students were finally told about the project during the school's annual e-safety week.  Head of ICT at the Shenfield Common school, Tara Elliston, is pleased that the project, aimed to highlight the dangers of the internet to youngsters, was such a success.
