LOCAL NEWS

Evening Echo, by Laura Smith

Essex Police spent £7.7million in overtime payments last year. The average officer claimed £2,139, according to research by the Policy Exchange thinktank.  Tony Rayner, chairman of the Essex Police Federation, questions whether the figure shows a lack of officers.  He said: “If there’s such an overtime bill, doesn’t that show there aren’t enough police?  Mr Rayner said overtime would be essential in the policing of major events, such as the upcoming eviction of the travellers’ site at Dale Farm in Crays Hill, Billericay.   He said: “How are they going to do that if they don’t pay overtime? It’s going to be a massive policing operation. I should imagine it won’t be us kicking the travellers off, it will be the bailiffs, but we will have to be there for the inevitable punch-ups.”  He also criticised the timing of this announcement, coming just before the Windsor Review into police pay and conditions.
