Body Talk - 21 Aug 2007

As you are probably aware BUPA Hartswood are now sponsoring Body Talk. As a result I had the pleasure of chatting to one of BUPA Hartswood's top plastic surgeons, Mark Gittos.
Mark hails from New Zealand originally, and trained in both New Zealand and Australia, before coming to England and working at first for the National Health Service. He spent many years working in the Billericay Burns Unit, treating people with serious, sometimes life threatening, injuries. It was during this time that he found his niche as a plastic surgeon. He has an eye for detail and is very precise in his work.

Mark then made the move to the private sector, and hasn't looked back since. He estimates that he sees about 1,000 people per year for surgery of varying degrees. The most popular cosmetic surgery is breast implants, which can be for breast enhancement or as a result of a mastectomy.
His advice to you when looking for a surgeon is to check out their qualifications. There are many smaller consultancies opening up now with the increase in popularity of this type of surgery. Make sure that they belong to a recognised governing body, and if at all possible, go on recommendation. After all, this is surgery that we're talking about, and it should be taken seriously. Many companies offer special deals, including travelling to a foreign country to get a better price. Touro - surgery, as Mark termed it. Beware! You generally only ever get what you pay for, and, if anything should go wrong, it becomes much more difficult to put right when dealing with a surgeon from another country. Mark says that he and his colleagues are seeing an increase in the amount of patients who are needing treatment as a result of bad treatment abroad.

If you'd like to hear more about Mark and his work, he is giving a talk at The Holiday Inn on 4th September at 7pm, for more details either call Emily Finch on 01277 266757 or drop her an e-mail on finchem@bupa.com.
If you can't make that, then you can always email me with your questions, and I'll pass them on.
