Brentwood Town FC - Monday 27th August Round Up

Monday 27th August

Ryman League Division One North

GREAT WAKERING ROVERS 1 BRENTWOOD TOWN 1

Brentwood lost their 100% record in this intriguing Bank Holiday tussle at Burroughs Park against old rivals Great Wakering.

Brentwood manager Steve Witherspoon thought his team had created enough chances to have won the game despite being behind for 78 minutes after Martin Tuohy gave Rovers a fifth minute lead, and Brentwood secured a point when Terry Scotchmer equalised seven minutes from time.

For Great Wakering this was their first point of the season but they showed enough in this game to suggest they will be tough opponents during the season. With Edgware Town losing Brentwood went one point clear at the top of the Ryman Division One North table. Brentwood made an unsteady start and conceded a goal when Danny Pitts' free kick from the left resulted in a loose ball falling to the feet of Tuohy who slammed it into the roof of the net.

Rovers continued to make life uncomfortable for the Brentwood, with Joel Ettienne-Clark a threat on the left wing and Sam Clarke a driving force in the home midfield. But Brentwood eventually worked their way back into the game and went closest to equalising in the 34th minute when Scotchmer's free kick was headed down by Jon Whittaker to the feet of Danny Dafter inside the area. Dafter set up Steve King for a shot but his effort just missed the target, taking a deflection for a corner.

Then another Lee Noble's corner flew across the face of goal just before half time with no one able to get a touch and Brentwood were still behind at the break. In the 52nd minute Rovers keeper Louis Green produced a great save to push a powerful shot from Leon Diaczuk onto the crossbar. From the resulting corner another good chance fell to King but he sliced his shot over the bar.

Brentwood brought on Danny Carroll, Sean Thomas and Steve Jones as they searched for a goal against a determined home side. The breakthrough finally came in the 83rd minute when Noble's corner was only partially cleared and Scotchmer hit a fierce shot which Green did well to get a hand to but could not keep out.

There were more chances in the final minutes as both sides visibly wilted on a hot afternoon. Brentwood's best opportunity fell to Thomas but he elected to pass when a shot looked the best option.

Brentwood Town: Marc Palmer, Steven King, Chris Neville, Terry Scotchmer, Richard Ketchell, Gareth Street (Daniel Carroll 76), Joao Carlos, Dan Dafter, Jonathon Whittaker, Leon Diaczuk (Sean Thomas 65), Lee Noble

Attendance: 114

ARLESEY TOWN v BRENTWOOD TOWN

Brentwood's next fixture is in the FA Cup. This Saturday (1st September) they travel to Arlesey Town for a preliminary round tie (3pm kick off). It is a quick return to Bedfordshire for Blues as they played their first ever Ryman League match at Arlesey on the opening day of this season. That game saw an impressive 3-1 win for Brentwood but they can expect it to be an even tougher game on Saturday as Arlesey have found some good form since then and beat Bury Town 4-1 on Bank Holiday Monday.

There are places available on the coach for any supporters wishing to travel to Arlesey on Saturdays please call Keith Woodcock on 07885 233210 to reserve a seat. If the game ends in a draw the replay will be at the Brentwood Centre next Tuesday 4th September, kick off 7.45pm .
