Eastern Junior Alliance Southern Section (Under 16s)

Sunday 9th September

Eastern Junior Alliance Southern Section (Under 16s)

BRENTWOOD TOWN 1 MALDON TOWN 2

Blues' new Under 16 side kicked off the new season at the Brentwood Centre with a narrow defeat to Maldon Town.

The first 10 minutes were unsurprisingly scrappy with it being the first competitive game of the season, though the visitors perhaps had the best of the early exchanges. Brentwood’s first chance of note came on 15 minutes, a corner on the left from Jack Sherwood caused problems at the back post, leading to Ryan Cuthbertson looping a shot wide right. This led to a sustained spell of Blues’ possession, mostly down the right side, but with only Sherwood’s long range shot straight at the keeper to show for their efforts.

Maldon took the lead on 38 minutes. A through ball from midfield fell loose in the Blues’ penalty area and their striker was quickest to react to shoot home into the bottom left corner of the net. A minute later the visitors should have made it 2-0 but the good opportunity was wasted, and they were made to pay just two minutes later, when Brentwood winger Kevin Plange-Tabil closed down the opposing full-back, winning possession then running in unchallenged to neatly slot the ball past the ‘keeper and level the scores.

Immediately after the break, Maldon pushed forward in numbers, and on 50 minutes from a left-wing cross the ball was knocked down for an onrushing player to fire into the top-right corner and restore their lead.

As the half went on neither team were particularly inspiring, however during the last 20 minutes Brentwood had a series of opportunities to draw level again. A quick free-kick from Adam Gomez provided Jeisone Kwama with a chance but he couldn’t connect with his shot, and the best chance perhaps came from another free-kick on 75 minutes, this time captain Jordan Ogles’ deep ball into the Maldon box found Joe Thwaite at the far post, but he headed just wide.

Blues’ were understandably disappointed with the result at the final whistle, and will look to bounce back next Sunday when they travel to league newcomers Benfleet.

Brentwood Town: Kellard (Green), Brown (Jay), Thwaite, Ogles (c), Sparkes, Sherwood, Aarons (Gomez), Wood, Plange-Tabil (Melia), McGill, Cuthbertson (Kwama)
