Brentwood Town FC - Saturday 22nd September Round Up

RYMAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE NORTH

ILFORD 0 BRENTWOOD TOWN 1

An 84th minute goal by substitute Danny Carroll gave Brentwood the three points that took them back to the top of the table, but it could have been a more comfortable win had they not missed two penalties earlier in the match.

With the league leaders AFC Sudbury losing 1-0 at Dartford, and Edgware Town only drawing at home to Tilbury, Brentwoods win put them two points clear at the top of Ryman Division One North.

Ilford went into the game as underdogs having taken just one point from their first five league games, but they created the first chance when James Cole shot over the bar when the ball fell to him following a long throw from Rickie Hayles.

Two minutes later Brentwood were awarded their first penalty when Cole handled inside the area but Leon Diaczuks kick was well saved by home keeper James Marrable, diving low to his right.

Brentwood continued to press for the opening goal with Chris Neville heading a chance straight at Marrable and Cole clearing a Danny Dafter shot off the line.

With Chris Stevens as a lone striker, Ilford were showing little attacking ambition and Brentwood could afford to push centre back Jon Whittaker up front before half time, but they were finding it increasingly difficult to break down a dogged home defence.

Brentwood were on top again right from the start of the second half and there were penalty appeals in the opening seconds when Joao Carlos went down in the area. Sean Thomas put a chance over the bar following a Carlos corner in the 50th minute, and Brentwood should have been ahead when Diaczuk was brought down in the 55th minute. This time Lee Noble took the penalty but he could not beat Marrable who made another good save, diving to his left this time.

Noble forced another good save from Marrable soon afterwards, and Brentwood keeper Marc Palmer was called into serious action for the first time in the 65th minute when he smartly pushed a free kick from Matthew West round the post for a corner.

Carroll replaced Diaczuk midway through the half but it looked as though Brentwood would fail to score until Carroll finally put them ahead six minutes from time. After a period of pressure, Dafter won a header down to Carroll who got past two challenges and shot home despite Marrable getting a hand on the ball.

Ilford brought on Julian Edwards as an extra forward bit it was too late and Brentwood finished with a deserved win although it could have been more comfortable had they taken their chances from penalty spot.

Brentwood Town: Palmer, King, Neville, Scotchmer, Whittaker, Street (Wilson 46), Carlos, Dafter, Thomas (Holmes 89), Diaczuk (Carroll 68), Noble

Attendance: 61
