Brentwood Town FC - Saturday October 6th Round Up

Brentwood have more cup action on Saturday (13th October) when they meet Staines Town of the Ryman Premier Division in the 3rd qualifying Round of the FA Cup.

This looks like being Blues toughest test of the season so far with Staines currently in fourth place in their league with a game in hand and having lost just once this season.

The match kicks off at 3pm at the Brentwood Centre.

Before then Brentwood are at home to Wivenhoe Town on Tuesday 9th October in a Ryman League fixture, kicking of at 7.45pm.

Saturday 6th October

FA Carlsberg Trophy Preliminary Round

BRENTWOOD TOWN 1 DULWICH HAMLET 0

A goal by Brentwoods Sean Thomas in the 24th minute proved decisive in this closely fought FA Trophy match at the Brentwood Arena.

This was Brentwoods first ever appearance in the competition and they were privileged to play one of the most famous of all non-league teams, Dulwich Hamlet, who have been members of the Isthmian (Ryman) League since 1907 and were four times winners of the FA Amateur Cup.

Brentwoods reward for the win on Saturday is another home tie in the 1st Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy, against Ryman Premier Harlow Town, who Brentwood knocked out of the FA Cup only last week.

Dulwich struggled to contain the home side for much of the first half of Saturdays game with the pace of Thomas down the middle, and the threat of Lee Noble and Joao Carlos on the wings, causing them problems.

Chris Neville put Thomas through in only the second minute but keeper Sheikh Ceesay saved well with his feet. Noble's pass in the 17th minute gave Thomas another chance to run at goal but, under pressure from defender Gbenga Sonuga, he could not manage to get a shot at goal.

But Brentwood took a deserved lead after Noble had been brought down just outside the penalty area. Terry Scotchmer's free kick was saved at the foot of the post by Ceesay and Thomas scored from the rebound, his fifth goal of the campaign.

Dulwich reorganised at the back with Meschack Nugent coming on to replace Jermaine Hinds and Steve May reverting to full back, but they only really threatened on one occasion when a speculative long range effort from Stanley Muguo just missed the target.

Brentwood pressed for a second goal before half time with a succession of corners. Noble's kick was pushed out to Neville whose shot was turned over the bar by Ceesay who was immediately into action again when Carlos's corner from the right looked to be dipping straight into goal until the keeper pushed it over via the crossbar.

The visitors produced a much better performance in the second half and had Brentwood under pressure at times.

Blues lost Noble with an injury in the 58th minute, Donovan Wilson taking his place in midfield.

The Blues defence of Neville, Scotchmer, Jon Whittaker and Steve King looked strong once more, and were well protected by the effective central midfield partnership of Gareth Street and skipper Dan Dafter. However, home keeper Marc Palmer did have to make a fine save from a deflected shot by May in the 75th minute to prevent the tie from going to a replay.

Brentwood Town: Palmer, King, Neville, Scotchmer, Whittaker, Street, Carlos (Harrisson 84), Dafter, Thomas, Carroll (Diaczuk 65), Noble (Wilson 58)
