Brentwood Town FC - Saturday 20th October Round Up

FA Carlsberg Trophy 1st Qualifying Round
BRENTWOOD TOWN 1 HARLOW TOWN 1

A goal by Brentwood substitute Leon Diaczuk fifteen minutes from time forced this tie to a Tuesday night replay. For a long time it looked as though James Bunn’s early goal and a resolute Hawks defence would see them avenge their FA Cup defeat on the same ground just three weeks earlier. Bunn seized his chance in the 12th minute when defender Jon Whittaker misjudged a long kick out of the sun from Harlow keeper David Hogan, and Bunn was left clear to shoot into the far corner.

Brentwood were struggling to impose themselves midfield where Harlow were contesting every ball and it took until the 25th minute before they created a decent chance. Lee Noble beat full back Mark Taylor and hit a cross to the far post where Sean Thomas’s header went into the side netting. A good run and low cross by Leon Lalite in the 39th minute caused a major problem in he Brentwood defence until Steve King hacked the ball away from under the crossbar.

Brentwood had two great opportunities to equalise just before half time. Firstly Dan Dafter put Danny Carroll through but Hogan came out to make a fine save at his feet. Carroll was injured and needed treatment but within moments of returning to the action his pass gave Thomas a clear run at goal but he was kept out by an almost identical save from Hogan.

Bunn could have made it 2-0 shortly after half time but he failed to convert a Kenny Davis cross.

Gareth Street tried his luck with two long range efforts at the Harlow goal but Blues were finding it difficult to create the openings for the equaliser they deserved on the run of play. In the 68th minute Whittaker suffered a bad hamstring injury and had to be carried off the field. Brentwood changed their formation, playing three at the back and bringing on Diaczuk in a forward role. This paid off in the 75th minute when Diaczuk converted from close range after a fine run by Carroll ended with him pulling the ball back across goal.

However, the game ended on a bad note for Brentwood with skipper Dafter being red carded in stoppage time.

The replay will be at Harlow on Tuesday (23rd October, kick off 7.45pm).

Brentwood Town: Palmer, King, Neville, Scotchmer, Whittaker (Diaczuk 68), Street, Carlos, Dafter, Thomas (Harrison 90), Carroll (Holmes 82), Noble

Brentwood Town have another home game next Saturday when they play Enfield Town in a Ryman North league fixture. Because of their various cup runs, this will be Blues’ first league match for five weeks, since they won 1-0 at Ilford on 22nd September.

Brentwood are still one of only two unbeaten sides in the Ryman Division One North, but the lack of league fixtures means they are now in fourth place in the table, level on points with third-placed Enfield Town, but Blues have played three games less.

Enfield Town are former Essex Senior League rivals of Brentwood and history will be on the side of the visitors who have never lost to Blues. In the eight previous meetings between the sides there have been five wins for Enfield and three draws.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Brentwood Town Reserves had an impressive 4-0 win at Concord Rangers on Saturday in the 2nd round of the Essex, Herts Border Combination Cup.

The Reserves are placed fifth in the league and they have a league game at home to 3rd placed Great Wakering Rovers on Tuesday 23rd October (kick off 7.45pm) and their next fixture is another home league match with Romford on Tuesday 30th October (kick off 7.45pm).
