Body Talk - 30th October

Bryony Lovett, General Surgeon was my guest this evening. Bryony's specialist subject is colorectal surgery, although she is fully trained in all aspects of surgery. The most worrying disease in her field is bowel cancer. The advice was to consult your GP if you notice any unusual symptoms. We tend to get a bit embarassed about discussing anything to do with this part of the body, but the sooner it is detected the more likely it is that the surgery and treatment will be less svere than if it is left.

The most common symptoms are rectal bleeding, anal pain or itchiness. I also learned that haemorroids are inside and not outside, the little lumps that are outside are anal skin tags, they aren't serious and removal of these is normally regarded as cosmetic surgery.

Bryony has also been involved with the Enhanced Recovery Programme, which is dedicated to making the patient feel better from start to finish of the procedure, and aims to have them out of the ward by day 4 or 5.

Bryony is also a surgical tutor and examiner, and has helped to launch a new curriculum for training surgeons in the UK.

Bryony is an exceptional lady, I have only listed a few of the projects that she is involved in. Her enthusiasm and dedication to her career is amazing. If you would like to know more, email me and I can pass on your comments.
