PHOENIX FM'S SATURDAY PITSTOP WITH ESSEX FORD BILLERICAY - 5.1.8

Happy New Year to Saturday Pitstop listeners. No write up after last week's show which repeated interviews with three popular 2007 guests (chief inspector Alan Ray from Brentwood Police, Shenfield High School head teacher John Fairhurst and London gangster turned boxer Roy Shaw).

Brentwood Mayor's New Year wishes

Brentwood Mayor Frank Kenny came on today's show to wrap up 2007 and look ahead to the New Year in the borough. Chosen charities for his mayoral year to May 2008 are Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society and The Marillac Nursing Home, in Warley. In his six months in office to date the mayor has supported the borough's volunteer sector and been delighted by the modernisation and opening of the former Coopers furniture store on Wilsons Corner.

For 2008 Frank is looking forward to further progress on the William Hunter Way development that includes Brentwood's new cinema. A revised planning application is expected by March following last year's withdrawal of original plans due to opposition to the proposed scale.

He also mentioned the continued return of residents in the armed forces from Afghanistan and progress for Sawyers Hall School, now out of special measures.

New Year rail chaos

Commuting Phoenix FM listeners returning to work on January 2 were disrupted by the delayed reopening of Liverpool Street station. The London station for travellers from Essex into the capital was scheduled for a ten-day shutdown to demolish a bridge and for track and cable repairs. Instead of being back in operation at dawn on January 2, Liverpool Street did not resume normal service until late the following morning.

Shenfield commuter Jeff Randall, writing in his Daily Telegraph column, said journeys normally taking 60 minutes became two and a half hour ordeals via Stratford and a forced switch onto the Central line. Brentwood's Richard Enever, rail services officer for Brentwood Bus & Rail Users' Association (www.bbarua.org.uk), blamed privatisation of the network for the maintenance planning failure by Network Rail and contractor Colas Rail.

Small Mercies is the title track of Steve's 2004 album played on today's Saturday Pitstop. Since turning professional in 1985, Steve has appeared with the likes of Paul Young, Pete Townsend and Steve Winwood. New release Out Of The Woods will be launched at Brentwood's Essex Arms on Feb 15 (see www.myspace.com/stevejcurtis)
